Car Workshop Photography: Metal or Wood, Two Very Different Shoots

Car Workshop Photography for Classic Wood-Built Cars

Today I want to talk about two very different car workshops – both interesting in their own way. Let’s start in chronological order.

The first shoot was all about history and craftsmanship. Matthew from Harrogate, who runs Cowdery Coachworks, restores classic cars originally built with wooden frames. His father and grandfather also worked with wood, building boats and cars, and Matthew continued the family tradition.

This type of car workshop photography requires attention to detail. Working with wood is slow, precise, and full of small nuances that are important to show visually.

Classic Car Workshop Photography: Details and Craftsmanship

What really stood out in Matt’s workshop was how clean it was. No oil, no fuel — just wood shavings on the floor. This made it perfect for classic car workshop photography, where materials and texture matter as much as the car itself.

I took a mix of staged portraits, wide shots of the space, and close-ups of tools and wooden elements. These images help workshop owners show their expertise and attract clients who value traditional restoration work.

Automotive Workshop Photography for Modern Body Repair

The second shoot took place near London at GSG Bodyworks, a workshop focused on modern car body repairs.

When I arrived, the space was large but visually busy. We spent a bit of time tidying up before shooting. The marketing manager asked me to focus on painting and polishing processes – exactly the kind of content that works well for automotive workshop photography.

I photographed several vehicles, including a Mercedes van and a classic English cab, to show a range of services and repair stages.

Garage Photography for Business: Light, Cleanliness and Process

The workshop lighting wasn’t ideal, which is common in many garages. I brought a compact flash setup to improve the light and control reflections.

With good lighting and a cleaner layout, the space changed completely. What initially looked like a typical cluttered garage turned into a strong visual set for garage photography for business – perfect for websites, social media, and marketing materials.

This kind of photography helps workshop owners show professionalism, build trust, and explain what happens behind the scenes.
