Behind the Scenes Photography from Real Photo Shoots

Photography Behind the Scenes: A Photographer at Work

A photographer is someone who almost always stays behind the scenes. In many years of work, I realised that I barely had any behind the scenes photography of myself. You work on set, surrounded by two or three people, fully focused on the shoot. And yet, does anyone ever think to take a couple of photos of the photographer at work? Almost never.

Instead, people usually record short clips on their phones of what I am already shooting with professional equipment. The result is predictable: strong, polished images from the camera and a handful of average or poor phone photos. But none of them show the actual professional photoshoot process from the outside.

Behind the Scenes Photography as Part of the Creative Process

At some point, I started to allocate a little time to capture some behind-the-scenes shots. Unfortunately, there’s not always someone around to take photos of me working. But when I’m lucky enough to have a fellow photographer with me who can capture those moments, it’s a huge win!

Behind the scenes photography is not just about ego or social media content. For photographers, it is a way to look at their own workflow from a different angle, to analyse posture, movement, interaction with clients, and even lighting decisions. For other photographers, it is a chance to see how a shoot actually looks in real conditions, not just the final polished images.

That is why I genuinely encourage everyone: if you ever see a photographer or videographer at work, take a few BTS shots from different angles. These images often become far more valuable over time than they seem in the moment. Trust me — any photographer will be incredibly grateful.

Here you can see the results of my work — a collection of creative photo shoots in London.
